2Good tools when they work  Jul 10, 2009
They are powerful and long charged BUT the recipro broke all to pieces internally the first time I used it. The drill case broke the first time it was used and now the chuck is stripped. Of course it is warrantied but so far it has taken a long time to get the parts and what does one do while it is being fixed? Guess that is why it has a 5 year warranty!!! This has only been used at home so the use is not like a pro would subject it too.

4Good Value  Nov 01, 2008
I'm surprised by the negative reviews. I like many other bought this set
as a factory refurb with 2Ah batteries for ~net $125 a couple of years ago.

I have been so pleased with the drill's balance and power I have purchased 6 more for work and home.
Don't expect anyones reciprocating saw or circular saw to run long on batteries, they just suck juice.

I have recommended the set as well at $250+/- and the purchaser is still pleased with it.

At the current (Oct 2008) price of $210 this represents a very good value.

1Don't be fooled by the good hitachi name this set is lousy  Aug 24, 2008
I will start by saying I have always liked Hitachi tools and after buying the 18V impact driver last summer, I decided to give this set a try. The price was right and I needed a new set of tools so I figured why not!

I'll tell you why not...

The sawzall is bulky, clumsy and woefully underpowered. It rattles like it is vibrating all the screws right out of it and just overall is not the least bit pleasant to use.

The circular saw is decent but has an awkward safety to engage the trigger that I don't like even a little bit. This saw, like the sawzall just seems really underpowered for 18V but as long as you have relatively fresh blades in both, they will get the job done. Just don't believe all that junk all the cordless tool companies tell you about cutting 98 2x4's on a single charge, it just won't ever happen unless you change the blade 98 times I suppose....

Last is the drill. What an absolute disgrace this thing is. After owning maybe a dozen cordless drills in my lifetime, this was the single biggest disappointment. I have never had this particular thing happen on a drill of any kind before but the drill chuck actually stripped the screw that retains it and the chuck came off the drill. This is absolutely unacceptable, I've only had this set for 2 months and I absolutely hate it. If I could return it I would. The drill also gets exceptionally hot when used for extended periods which I find to be troublesome because I mean almost too hot to hold anymore which is just lame in my opinion.

As it stands I will probably give the whole set away without the batteries which I'll keep for the impact gun and move on to another brand, most likely bosch.

Avoid this set like the plague unless you are only going to use it once a year for light work. Certainly not the quality I've come to expect from this company over the years....

UPDATE

It's now October. I've had the set since June.

Today the cordless drill has died. Thought the battery needed replacement, it won't come out. After 15 minutes of wrestling with this piece of junk I get the battery out and put in a new one. Drill is dead. Please people, don't consider buying this set, there is not one redeeming quality in this set. Think about it this way. If this were truly a 4 pc. Lithium Ion cordless set worth anything at all, wouldn't it cost more then $210????

Save your money, dump Hitachi

4everything is great except....  Jul 15, 2008
let me start by saying that i am a big fan of hitachi. my miter saw is a 10" hitachi, i use a hitachi framing gun and compressor and my corded drill is a hitachi. i just bought the combo kit on saturday and used it for the first time yesterday (monday) at work.
i burned out the drill the first time i used it. i was drilling an 11/16" hole through a 4x8 beam and the drill started smoking and now it doesn't work. my porter cable 19.2 volt has no problem drilling like that so i didn't think it would be a problem with the 18 volt hitachi. i was pretty upset about that but i figure i'll just keep using my 19.2v porter cable for a drill.
the sawzall and the circ. saw are awesome. i used them all day yesterday. i was cutting through 5/8", 3/4" and 7/8" steel allthread with the sawzall and it worked great. the circ. saw was cutting osb, and 2x6's and also worked great. what i plan on doing is buying a lithium ion impact driver and using the batteries for this whole set which is the coolest thing about the hitachi's cordless tools.

5Very Happy  Dec 12, 2007
This was my second purchase of Hitachi cordless tools. One of the decision points for me was the handle design. For me, they are very comfortable in the hand.
