I've had pretty good luck with Hitachi tools up until this one. The overall quality seems closer to a homeowner grade than the price would indicate. Number one problem is the chuck, which is continually either slipping the bit or jamming and having to be released with pliers. I think I should be able drill a 3/16 hole in hardwood without the bit slipping in the chuck! Number two is this drill is weak, with gloves on I can stop the drill by gripping the chuck, which I often do when trying to get the stupid chuck to grab the bit. Number three is the battery release which is uncannily stubborn. These are all problems I would have expected if I had paid less. I wish I had paid more and got the Makita.

Case broke on first use and now the chuck has stripped. Yeah all are covered by the warranty but the repair parts take a long time to come in, guess that is why they give such a long warranty period!!!

The Hitachi DS18DFLPC is a work horse performing well in every application. The kit comes with two batteries so you can work all day and into the evening with ease. It comes with a handy carrying case. I am satisfied with this tool and reccomend it to anyone with a big project in mind. This drill is a lot better than the many different manufacturer's drills (Makita, Porter-Cable, Skil, Black and Decker, etc.) I have owned. The battery and battery charger are reliable whereas they were the first things that failed on the other drills. It is a good weight - sturdy but not overly heavy. It is ergonomically shaped and my husband and I have found it easy to use. In fact, we now have two - his and hers.
