the little green drill that could Aug 09, 2010 I've owned this drill since May 2010 and so far, I like! It's made (or at least assembled) in China like a lot of tools nowadays, but I can attest that build quality isn't a concern here ...designed in Japan or USA? It is lightweight for a cordless drill and I find it is ergonomically excellent. Although the handle has a slightly odd-looking shape, try holding it and I think you'll agree that everything about it feels just right in the hands. Perfect for women and those with smaller hands. And anyone who doesn't want to carry the weight of a full-size cordless - at 2.2 lbs, it's about half the weight of a full-size. One useful feature lacking is one or two built-in mini bubble levels, though most drills don't have this either.
On high speed (0-1300 rpm) it has enough torque for most drilling jobs. And for drilling larger holes and driving screws, you can manually shift to low (0-300 rpm) which gives less speed but more torque. Its 1300 rpm maximum speed is decently high - some drills have maximum rpm around half that, which won't suffice for tiny holes. Speaking of which, the 3/8" chuck is fine enough that it can hold 1/32" bits no problem! I often use this for drilling small holes in circuit boards.
Many drills still come with obsolete Ni-Cad batteries which don't last long - unacceptable in 2010. This Hitachi comes with 2 lithium-ion batteries which are rated at 12V peak (fully-charged) and average 10.8V during usage. They are small and lightweight, but the downside of their small size is their energy capacity of 1.5 Amp-hour is about half that of most full-size. So on heavy drilling, you'll need to switch out and recharge more often, but on most household work it's usually enough. The included charger takes less than 1 hour to charge each battery. I can't yet comment on long-term battery life since I've only had this drill for a few months but I'll report back later to tell how they're holding up. Careful: Hitachi still has some cordless drills in their lineup, which look somewhat similar to this one, which are powered by Ni-Cad batteries. Make sure the one you get says Lithium-Ion.
A great little dual-speed lithium-ion finesse drill, Hitachi got this one right.
jack Jul 27, 2010 so far so good...
does a nice job.
what was the problem with other less expensive drills was the battery. if it goes bad it is better to buy a new drill w/2 batteries...not always the best answer.
Lithium ions are the best so far. And this one is good.
Hitachi 12-volt Lightweight Drill/Driver May 29, 2010 I purchased this drill to replace a 7.2V Makita. I have loved the Makita for years and hated to give it up but this little drill has made my Makita a distant memory. What is perfect about this drill is the weight. I don't need something that will drive screws for hours because I can't last that long anyway. After using it on a kitchen cabinet project, building bird houses, building a gate, and many little jobs around the house I can say it is perfect if you want something that won't wear out your arm and shoulder while you work. I have one small complaint. The chuck has a very slight wobble in it. I thought it might be a problem but that hasn't been the case. I would recommend this to anyone wanting a good lightweight drill. Don't be fooled by the voltage. The average home owner doesn't need 18 or 24 volts of drilling and driving power. Remember, we were at 7.2V and 9.6V not that long ago.

Great drill, but will it have enough power for bigger jobs Mar 08, 2010 I recently started doing some beginners woodworking and I was looking for a new drill to replace a super cheap Black & Decker that just wasn't getting the job done. I wanted a one size fits all drill, but I didn't want to pay too much and I didn't want it to be too heavy. Lithium-ion would definitely be a bonus as well. I saw the great reviews for this drill and I read that a 12V drill is good enough for general woodworking.
After using the drill, I'm very happy with the purchase. It's very light and it's great having 2 batteries that charge very quickly. It also has way more clutch settings than my old Black & Decker, which is useful. My only concern is that this is a 12V PEAK drill. It sounds like you get 12V when the battery is fully charged, but it quickly drops down to 10.8V. I hope that's powerful enough when I use it for bigger jobs. It seems powerful enough, but it slowed a little when I used it with a Kreg pocket hole jig. The pocket hole jig has a large drill bit and the drill did work, but I wouldn't say it was "easy power". I'll update the review if I have any problems going forward.

Great Tool Mar 01, 2010 This is my third or fourth drill, and I can honestly say after using this one that the other drills were all crap. This drill is light, yet has plenty of torque and speed. It comes with two batteries, and the charge on a single battery is very sufficient. It also hold a charge between uses, which none of my old drills could seem to do. Don't expect to be drilling endlessly into deep oak or masonry, but for cabinetry and such things, this drill is a dream. It is nice to have something that will put 50 screws into something and also doesn't weigh 10 lbs.
