Looks cool, works OK, fence alignment terrible Jun 25, 2010 I've had the saw for a year now, and was initially very impressed with the fit, finish and function. Although I intended to use it primarily for building furniture, for the first few months I had to use it only for rough carpentry work, so things seemed OK.
Once I began using it for my woodworking a few months ago, it became clear that the fence had not been set accurately at 90 degrees to the blade - it was a bit off. I noticed this when checking for square with a good quality square, and confirmed it with the 5-cut method. That's when I found the following design issues:
a) Although the split fences have adjustment holes, the holes in the left fence are smaller than the ones in the right fence. This limits the maximum angle to which you can adjust the fence.
b) The base table of the saw was NOT calibrated to Zero degrees relative to the fence as claimed, hence the blade was not cutting square to the fence.
c) With angle set to Zero, the fence cannot be adjusted perpendicular to the blade (limited as explained in point a). Specifically, I get a full 1/8" difference with the 5-cut method, which means that the fence is 1/32" out of square even when angled to its limit.
d) The laser guide was not set accurately as claimed. It cannot be adjusted by simply following the instructions. There are actually 3 adjustment points, not just one as shown in the manual. One of these is hidden behind the Warning sticker.
After trying to figure all this out, I have come to the conclusion that the base table is off by about a 1/2-degree. I confirmed this by setting it to 1/2-degree right and successfully setting the fence perpendicular. Of course, this negates the benefit of the angle markings and the "thumb-actuated positive miter stops".
I called Hitachi Warranty support, and although they tried to be helpful, it was clear that they weren't quite knowledgeable about the saw. They referred me to a Warranty Service Center who were equally unhelpful.
Another minor thing - the electric brake works most of the time, but does skip every now and then Not a big deal, but I wish it would work as designed.
So this is probably a decent saw for rough work, but needs adjustments for anything accurate. Hence, for the price, it's not worth it.

4++ Stars May 27, 2010 I would have rated this saw at 4 1/2 stars if that option was available. I purchased the original model a long time ago(10+ years) when I was a GC and my crew used this saw every day and it never went in the shop as still runs today but it was showing its wear so I decided to buy a new saw. I looked at the 10" and 12" but decided to go back to a proven entity. The major difference is the addition of the laser and the light but it still has the dual rails which I think is the key for these tools to maintain its accuracy. I typically don't go for gimmicks for things like a laser as I would rather align my cuts by eye and the blade, but I find the laser very accurate and helpful when you need to make cuts that don't need to be super critical. The lamp is a nice feature but it is the reason that I knocked a few points off of my rating. I find it cumbersome as its stem is located adjacent to the trigger and it takes time to adjust your use of this tool around it but you certainly are able to get used to, but it certainly is not a deal breaker. Earlier this year my wife and I were installing new wood floor through out our house and she made at least 50% of the cuts and this was the first power saw of any type that she had ever used. This speaks for itself in regard to her feeling safe around this saw, ease of use, etc. I was able to buy it at a great price around $275 but it is certainly a bargain even at $50 more
Nice design, bad product Dec 04, 2009 Bought this to upgrade from a conventional miter saw. Checked it out before using and found that the saw blade was misaligned with the turntable. It would have damaged the turntable inserts and blade if I had started using it. Don't know because I never used it, but it would probably would not have cut straight.
Called Hitachi customer service and got no help on service or exchange.

Great Miter Saw for the price May 28, 2009 I purchased this for my Dad for X-Mas and he loved it! The laser was a nice bonus that he didn't have from his previous model.

Not Impressed Yet! May 08, 2009 After waiting for years to buy this saw because of all the great reviews I bought the one with the laser. I build furniture and thought this would be the end all of miter saws. First off, the fence was out of adjustment and took some doing to line up. After less than 3 months of limited usage, the electric brake quit braking! I took it to an authorized repair facility, they ordered a switch which came in defective. Then they ordered another switch, armature, and two other items and I got the saw back after about 4 weeks. Less than 10 hours of use and once again, no brake -- it just coasts down forever which really makes it totally inefficient. I'd just as soon use my table saw. I contacted Hitachi once again wanting them to send my a replacement but it won't work that way. I need to take it to another authorized repair place and have them go through whatever the proper channels are to replace this saw. Maybe since it's "new & improved" I should have gotten the older, proven one or maybe because it's made in a different factory. Whatever the case, I'm very disappointed with this saw up to now. Purchased the end of October and barely any use.
