2slow cutting but otherwise OK  Feb 12, 2010 By Michael Winters
The Hitachi core bit for Hardie siding is designed so that the tips are protected from nail strikes which is not bad but it makes a big difference in how effectively the bit cuts through fiber cement board and the wood sheathing layer underneath. The cutting depth is also excessive for most parts of the country where Hardie siding is actually being used. Total cutting depth needed is usually less than 1" total for the cement board and the plywood or OSB sheathing layer.

Bi-metal hole saws with their high speed steel teeth dull quickly when cutting fiber cement board and are very slow at cutting plywood and OSB. Standard bi-metal hole saws also eat up cordless batteries where it is common to get about 4 holes at most per battery charge with an 18 volt drill, even a top of the line lithium-ion model.

For holes 6-1/4 inch in diameter or less we have had much better success with the Blue Boar TCT hole cutters with their tungsten carbide teeth and much more aggressive cutting action. Takes a fraction of the time to bore a hole with a cordless drill, and our batteries last all day long no matter how many holes we have to make, even 6-1/4" diameter for tankless water heater venting.

BLUE BOAR 6-1/4" (159mm) Self-Feed TCT 2-1/4" deep multipurpose Tungsten Carbide hole cutter outperforms self-feed bits & bi-metal hole saws. Cut wood, MDF, OSB, laminates, Hardie & chipboard, plaster, drywall, brick, Formica

Someone at Blue Boar recommended we use the 3-speed cordless drills and the medium speed range for the smoothest cutting and we quickly found this to be true when using hole saws of any size. We still use the low speed range when cutting holes in Hardie siding that are larger than 6-1/4 inches in diameter. The Hole Pro X-230 adjustable hole cutter does a great job of making even 8" diameter holes in Hardie or other cement board siding and the plywood or OSB sheathing with all of our 18 volt cordless drills.

Hole Pro X-230 Kit: 1-7/8" to 9" Infinitely Adjustable Twin Blade Hole Saw Cutter 3" 4" 5" 6" 7" 8" 9" Hole Wood Sheetrock Plaster Fiberglass Plastic MDF Cement Board. Use ¼ Torque of Hole Saw to Cut Twice As Fast

With the Hole Pro tungsten carbide blades it cuts very quickly through fiber cement board siding and the blades last a long time for dozens of holes. Being able to adjust the hole size anywhere from 2" up to 9" for the exact size we need is also very useful. Sometimes we want the hole a little over size and other times a tight fit around the pipe or vent. Easy to adjust the Hole Pro to the perfect hole size for the job.

What is often overlooked or not mentioned by both the fiber cement board manufacturers like Hardie and Certainteed, nor by the hole saw and circular saw manufacturers that sell cutters and blades for cutting cement board is that the silica dust is highly carcinogenic and should not be inhaled. Hardie recommends that their boards be scored and snapped but this hardly works for holes. This is where the Hole Pro shields are a super solution. All the silica dust is caught inside the shield and then dumped safely into a pail.

We use the Hole Pro arbor adapter when using the Blue Boar TCT hole saws so the same Hole Pro shield can trap all the silica dust and it makes it easy to do a perfectly straight cut. We also like the depth adjustment on the Hole Pro arbor adapter as we do not always know what is inside the wall where we are making a cut and the shield and arbor make it easy to limit how deep we cut so expensive mistakes are not accidentally made by damaging hidden wires or pipes. This is another reason for getting a 2-1/2" cut depth hole cutter that is deep enough to go through the cement board siding and the wood sheathing layer while making use of the Hole Pro hole saw shield.

I have come across too many carpenters and sheetrock contractors who after 20 years in the trade now have breathing problems to not take a few precautions for myself and my workers. The Hole Pro shields make it easy to control any dust and shavings from whatever material we are cutting. Also makes cleanup a lot faster and makes it a lot easier to meet the feds lead paint regs that go into effect this April.
