5Extremely versatile  Jun 28, 2010
I purchased this in the middle of an emergency remodel of a rental. I already owned several of these Hitachi tools and batteries. It is great to be able to grab it quickly and get to work on a variety of projects without messing with a cord. I have used it with flap-disks for removing rust and trimming a sticky door, a cutting wheel for nails and padlocks, and a grinder for normal metal-grinding stuff. It DOES NOT take the place of a corded grinder, as the type of tool it is does drink the juice. It is for quick jobs. You only get about 4-6 minutes max of continuous heavy grinding out of a charge. I would also recommend the larger (3.0Ah) battery for longer life AND it balances the tool perfectly.

5Everything I expected  Mar 14, 2010
As with all my hitachi tools, I am very happy with this cordless grinder. I use it primarily with a metal cutting wheel. While building a machine shed on my small farm with no electricity, I would charge both of my Li ion batteries before heading out to the farm. I was able to cut the top angles of a 24ft gable end of barn metal with one battery and screw on the metal with the other. Both batteries lasted long enough to do the job. [one side] I hope that hitachi will keep making such dependable products. I know other tool manufacturers that made quality tools in the past have went downhill lately. Dewalt to name number one on my down hill list. Hitachi, Good tools, good prices.

2Goes through batteries like...  Sep 16, 2009
...well it goes through batteries like something that goes through batteries REALLY REALLY fast...

I got this cordless to use to prep the front of my house for paint. My place is over 100 years old & has a kaleidoscopic layering of paint that you would expect from an ancient & urban abode. I was using a corded grinder to do a lot of the prep but I needed a 4.5" grinder to fit the paint removing pads that i had read about (Wagner Power Products 513041 Paint Eater Replacement Disc), and I thought that a cordless would be SOOOOO much more convenient. And it was... for the first 10 minutes. Then the grinder died & I thought "Aww no way... i must've grabbed a partially charged batt." Slapped the new batt in... same deal. So I actually *bought* a new batt just in case--same deal. YIPES!! At this rate i would need 3 chargers & 9 batteries to pull this off. It's a real shame too because the time that it was grinding you really notice how much nicer things are "sans cord"...

Now you may be thinking "Oh he's just way overpowering it--pushing so hard the motor nearly stalls." Nope. I was actually babying it, even more than usual because i've read that these particular paint disks work better with a super light touch.

So my final suggestion to those of you out there drawn to the siren call of going completely cordless: don't do eet! At least not with this grinder. I can't speak for any other brands (Bosch, Milwaukee or whatever) but this one doesn't cut it for anything but, IMO, light duty work. If all you need is to have something handy to cut the odd bolt or some rebar or perhaps for some lighter tile work you will probably be fine with this product... but powerful it ain't & easy on the batteries it REALLY ain't!

Oh, BTW, I have the Hitachi DS18DL 18-Volt Lithium-Ion 1/2-Inch Cordless Driver Drill which i couldn't be happier with. Well okay i lied. I think it's uglier than a mud fence, but it's got PLENTY of power (more than my old HUGE Milwaukee hammer drill) & seems pretty average battery-consumption-wise.

5Surprising value  Aug 09, 2009
If you are like me, you may be looking at this tool and thinking "why would I buy a grinder, no battery, etc."? This was an excellent deal for me, here's what I did: I bought a Hitachi 18v driver / drill combo set that included a carry bag, charger, and 2 batteries. The batteries are fully interchangeable, both the Ni and the Li-ion, between the Hitachi tools. This saved me about $120.

The grinder is lightweight, powerful, and the Lithium ion batteries you may use from another set are very lightweight. I have used the grinder on concrete, for cutting the bottoms of door jambs, tile, and other applications. It has plenty of power to spare, and does a superb job.

I have become a real fan of Hitachi tools over the last year. I started with the combo set I mentioned above, and have expanded my tool set to include almost all of Hitachi's 18v cordless tools (reciprocating saw, etc.), as well as a miter saw and a few other power tools. I recommend looking at the reviews for each type of tool you are considering, but let me tell you that I saved a lot of money and have totally interchangeable tools using just a few batteries (which is where most of the expense is). I highly recommend Hitachi 18v cordless tools and this grinder in particular.
