Surprising power Jan 29, 2009
By Austin Shoemaker I got this saw as a part of a kit, and felt obliged to post my review of the saw here because it has impressed me so much. My expectations were not all that high for this saw, and in fact, I didn't use it much for the first year that I had it. After only using it for light duty work for a long time, because I didn't think it would have the power for anything more, I decided to put it to the test. If it couldn't get the job done, I would be justified in buying the latest, greatest corded saw anyway.
I was building a cabinet out of 3/4" oak plywood, and had a bunch of cuts to make. Having to set and reset my guides over and over was getting to be a pain, so I doubled up the plywood to make the job go faster, and give the saw a real test. To my surprise, it didn't bog down at all through 1-1/2" of oak plywood. I'll use this much more often now that I know it can handle some tough cuts.
I couldn't be happier with my Hitachi cordless tools.

The only battery powered circular saw to buy Oct 23, 2009
By Robert B. Broadfoot Jr.
"bfoot"
I bought this after reading a review of battery powered tools in Consumer Reports. This was the top rated 18v drill as well as the only circular saw that they recommended. I previously had a Skill brand circular saw and it did pretty well but this one is amazing. I recently had to replace the floor on a deck because of rotting. I used this saw all day on pressure treated 2X6 lumber. Not only did it cut like butter, but I had to rip a 16 ft piece at the end of the day and it performed well.
I had not used Hitachi because of the weird look previously but with Consumer Reports recommendation and my experience, I give it two thumbs up.
Oh yes, it works great if you are left handed as I am. It has a safety button that can be depressed using either hand.

Good Saw for being Cordless Nov 01, 2011
By T. W. Grevstad This is my fifth tool from Hitachi's Li-On line of tools. I also own the reciprocating saw so I had some pre-conceived expectations of performance. This saw perfroms excellently for light duty cutting, but if you need to do some heavy duty plywood ripping you might want to pick up a corded model.
Pros:
Lite Weight
Includes Rip Fence
Has a built in light
Comfortable Grip
Cons:
For the price of the battery and tool you can get a reliable corded model
The battery suck down is huge when you need heavy duty performance
There should be markings on the back for height adjustment

Powerful portable saw Jan 12, 2010
By Pappy Having used a circluar saw for many years I am excited to get this DC saw out to the deer camp. The workman ship looks good and the power is amazing. Since purchasing the saw (without battery) to match my Hitachi cordless drill I also purchased a 3.0 amp-hour battery for the pair. This saw is perfect for trimming up a project without the hassle of stringing out cords then being tied to that spot. Now I can go deep into the woods to build or repair my deer stands with ease.

More Info on Possible Battery Incompatibility w/ Other Hitachi Lithium Tools May 07, 2011
By BoiseDick This amplifies the comments made by M. Murray. I am looking at new 18v lithium combos and thought Hitachi might be a good choice for my needs. However, be aware that Hitachi offers products in their traditional "cassette" style as well as a newer "slide" style. The slide style versions of the tools have an "S" in their model mumber after the voltage number. From what I can tell, drills and impact drivers in the US are available in both. So if you do like I considered and get a DS18DSAL drill and WH18SDSAL impact tool, and want to be able to switch between the 3.0 and 1.5 a-hr batteries among all your tools, you would want to get the other tools in the slide version, right? Well, it seems that Hitachi has made those tools available in the UK but not here yet. Hmmm. So if you are stuck on Hitachi and want to use one battery across all your tools, stick with the cassette version for now. And a month later, as luck would have it, Hitachi will roll out the slide battery tools a month after you buy them. For now, I waiting until Hitachi makes a more definitive move on the slide battery tools.
BTW, I am just trying to provide info and not judgement so gave this the same 4 star rating it had when I began the review.
